Dog Training Tips

by xgj2pet @ 2008-08-28 - 03:12:52

Considered “man's best friend,” dog training professionals have been disseminating more knowledge on how to make this animal live up to that title.

Here are tips that one should keep in mind in training his dog more easily.

Digging Behavior

Dogs, as social beings, consider digging as their outlet when they are lonely. Nutrient deficiency may also cause this digging. Also known as pica, they sometimes eat the dirt they dig to supplement their health. Spending more time with your dog and giving him a health check will keep his digging behavior at bay.

Potty Training

For dog potty training, a reward-based method will prove to be a very rewarding endeavor. Giving it a bit of dog food when it performs a good potty behavior will make it easier for it to remember the good thing that it did.

Repeat and Repeat

Considerable repetitions will give your dog ample time to grasp the command. Consistency is the name of the game. After doing enough repetitions, not helping him with the routine will test if the dog really got it. Three successful attempts in a row is a fine gauge in defining if it's just a fluke or if the dog has actually understood the drill.

Direct and Correct

Communicate to the dog how the drill should be. Be clear on what you want the dog to do. Just commanding the dog without correcting him if he did it wrongly is not advisable.

Timing is Gold

Timing means that you should consider the age of the dog when considering how to deal with him. It is best to train dogs while they are still puppies. Always remember that “old dogs can't learn new tricks” saying.

Be More Stubborn Than the Dog

Establishing rapport to the dog must always be in this order: you as the alpha dog (authoritative) and him as the submissive being. Show any sign of fear when he snaps back and you damage that rapport. Don't let the dog not complete the exercise. This will teach the dog to just hold out long enough for you give in to his preferences.

Be A Good Actor

Provide your puppy with an outlet for his chewing urges. Also, you may practice yelping loudly when your pup starts to chew on you. After yelping, fold your arms and for 10 minutes consider ignoring him. That response is the thing that happens when a pup becomes too rough on other puppies. But depending on your puppy's personality, he may react otherwise, such as biting more. In this case, use a more aggressive approach.

The Possibilities of Cat Training

by xgj2pet @ 2008-08-18 - 03:08:35

Due to constant comparison with their canine counterparts, people have said that cats cannot be trained. True, they may not be trained like a soldier but cats are incredibly intelligent animals that can be trained towards developing good habits if effort is put into work and understanding them.

Most cats that are adopted from a shelter, bought from a breeder or even just rescued from the streets don"t require a lot of instruction or guidance. Cats are quite self-sufficient but can still benefit from some training. Cat training is well worth doing because it will do good for the health and safety of both cat and owner.

There is no standard procedure to follow for cat training but there are a few cardinal rules in doing so. The first is that owners need to favor incentives over deterrents when possible. Cats also have self-interests so owners and trainers would want to leverage those. Using the cat's natural preferences to induce the cat to the desired goal will prove to be helpful. Second rule is to not let training damage the important bond of trust between owner and cat. Cat training would ideally strengthen the bond between pet and owner during training sessions. The third rule is that owners need to consult with a veterinarian to investigate any possible medical issues for any observed behavior problems. Some cats that exhibit aggression with no previous incident of violence may be showing pain aggression due to an illness or injury. Training the cat during this case is not advisable.

Before starting cat training, it is advisable that a bond be established with the cat. Cats value and look forward to attention and affection that can be gained from training. But cats would only participate when they can determine that they would not be put in any harm by the handler. It would seem that the cat is more dependent due to that aspect of their training. Although cats in the wild tend to work alone, domesticated cats are quite social.

Cats may not be pack animals that carry the instincts to please a leader but due to their curious nature, they respond to learning, playing, eating and relaxing with their human owners. Although the relationship between cat and owner would aid in training, cats still have that independent streak. Any cat owner who opts for cat training must keep their expectations realistic to avoid working under false pretenses while going through the training sessions.

Salt water aquarium packages

by xgj2pet @ 2008-08-15 - 02:40:21

When potential aquarists start looking into the possibility of starting their own salt water aquarium there is one thing which is often quite daunting - equipment.

There is a lot more equipment which is required in a salt water aquarium, especially a salt water reef aquarium.

Equipment requirements can be but not limited to :

* Heaters
* Water movement devices
* Lighting
* Protein skimmers
* Calcium reactors
* Filtration devices
* Auto top up devices
* Auto feeders
* Nitrate reducers
* Phosphate reducers
* Stirrers
* Reverse osmosis units
* Computer controllers
* And more…….

With all the information you need to know to start a successful salt water aquarium then only thing you realistically need to know about equipment is what they are for, what is a definitive requirement and what is not.

Of course all equipment is made by various manufacturers and this post cannot go into the detail as to which is the better manufacturer to use and why.

For the potential salt water aquarist who is not really that interested in technology and let’s face it not everyone is (except me!) and just wants a salt water aquarium in their home there is another way.

There are salt water aquarium packages which you can purchase. These salt water aquarium packages come in various shapes and sizes and combine everything you need in one handy take home package. The only thing which you will need with one of these packages is the water, salt, filtration and livestock itself. There are some salt water aquarium packages which even come with a reverse osmosis unit, some salt and man made filtration or natural filtration.

With these salt water aquarium packages you really do have everything you need. You simply purchase one, take it home (or have it delivered) set it up, add the salt water, go through the nitrogen cycle and then slowly stock it - easy eh!

The majority of these salt water aquarium packages keep the majority of the equipment either underneath the aquarium in the sump or in a specially designed rear panel which hides all the required equipment from view. The only trouble with the latter is that they do tend to remove a bit of the width of the tank - normally 3-4 inches. Personally if I was going to purchase a package like this I would opt for the sump one, but it really is up to personal choice.

Of course you do not need to go for a predetermined package deal you can approach your local fish shop and ask them to design you a salt water aquarium package. You will be surprised how many shops will accommodate this.

In closing if you are not interested in technology and purely want a salt water aquarium to look after and enjoy but do not want the hassle of purchasing all the required equipment separately then these salt water aquarium packages are certainly worth further investigation.

Exotic Pet Monkey Care

by xgj2pet @ 2008-08-06 - 05:50:44

There are many of us who consider our pets as part of the family, and this is evidenced by a recent statistic that states 65% of all U.S. homes own at least one pet. Along with this increase in pet ownership comes the need for services tailored for our pet’s comfort.

Basics of Exotic Pet Monkey Care

Exotic animals, like monkeys, may indeed be attractive as pets but such is certainly in violation of the animals’ natural living condition. As early as days or even hours after they are born, they are already separated from their mothers which is both unusual and unhealthy. The monkeys are deprived of the opportunity to develop the way they are predisposed. This further adds up to the many factors that you have to take into consideration when taking care of them.
Would you like to buy exotic pets?

Separated from its mother, an exotic pet monkey may manifest signs of depression and other symptoms of psychological maladjustment. Thus, it may not immediately appreciate the traditional methods of caring for pets and may long for what it was supposed to have experienced in his natural living environment. As an exotic pet owner, then, you must create an atmosphere that closely depicts such conditions. You must aim to respond to both physical and psychological needs. The only way to be aware of these needs is to gather information and observe at the very start, taking note of typical behaviors and responses.

Do you hope to have a pet that likes to be around people or can your ideal pet hide away when guests come around? Some pets live indoors all the time while others can spend a lot of time outside. Which do you prefer?

An unsuitable cage may worsen its psychological distress and cause further behaviour problems. Its living area must be secure and spacious. It would even be better if you can provide a companion of the same specie. In general, the area must be representative enough of nature. Modern habitats such as those commonly sold in pet shops are obviously inappropriate especially during younger years.

An exotic pet monkey, likewise, has specialized needs for food and nutrients. Diet may depend on the breed but should generally include protein-rich foods. Flowers, fruits, vegetables, insects, bugs, grasshoppers, and nuts are some other possible treats.

Unlike domestic cats and dogs, an exotic pet monkey has a greater tendency of being a carrier of diseases that may be passed on to humans. As such, ensure that it is regularly seen by a veterinarian specializing in exotic animals and is given the necessary vaccines. However, such services may be difficult to find and may be expensive as very few actually focus on it. Just the same, though, it is still a major requirement as it protects both your pet and yourself.

Caring for an exotic animal indeed involves commitment. Keep in mind that the lifespan of these types of animals are usually longer than that of the usual pets. Thus, before embarking on this responsibility, make sure that you are ready to face and respond to their needs and are capable of sustaining such devoted attitude. Otherwise, it would be best to leave them to nature’s care.

Buying a Pet ID tag is like buying insurance – you do so with the devout wish that you’re never going to need it. The “possible cost” of not having a pet ID tag is more expensive than the “actual cost” of buying the pet tag itself.

Why You Should Be Concerned with Your Cat Health Care

by xgj2pet @ 2008-08-03 - 03:02:05

The more fully you educate yourself about the ins and outs of cat care, the more able you will be to create an ideal care regimen for your pet. Is Your Dog's Training Collar The Proper Fit?

by xgj2pet @ 2008-07-29 - 13:10:14

In a collar and leash-based training program, the dog is taught a particular behavior with a leash. After the dog demonstrates that it understand the command, the leash is used to correct the dog if it disobeys or makes a mistake. The leash acts as a control and communication tool.

The ideal size for a training collar should fit snugly and comfortably over the dog's head. It is important that the training collar not be too tight or too loose. A tight collar is difficult to put on and off while a loose collar may just fall off the dog's head when it lowers its head.

The basic dog training collar is also known as choke collar, choke chain, training collar, correction collar and slip collar. These are the more popular collars used by both amateur and professional dog trainers.

The proper measurements
To get a properly fitted training collar, it is best to measure your dog's neck with a tape measure. Make sure that that tape measure is not too tight around your dog's neck. The training collar must fit snugly, but not too tight. Add 2 to 3 inches to that measurement. For example, if your dog's neck is 10 inches in diameter, then get a training collar that is 12 inches in diameter.

Chain slip collars are usually sized in 2-inch increments. Most training collars come in even sizes. So if your dog's neck is an odd number, you should round up to the next size. For example, if your dog has a 13-inch neck, you would buy a 14-inch collar, and so on.

It is also important that the pressure on the training collar can be instantly relieved when the leash is slackened. If you are unsure which collar to choose, ask a professional dog trainer or the staff at your local pet store.

The training collar must also be put on the dog the right way. Unlike a normal buckle collar, there is a right way and wrong way of putting on a training collar. Putting on the wrong way can make the collar ineffective or even dangerous.

Here are some considerations when choosing a training collar:
• Fit - It is essential that the training collar fits your dog properly. It will be easier to use and safer for your dog.
• Wear - Putting on a collar the wrong way is potentially dangerous and ineffective.
• Use - A training collar should be used as a sharp reminder and not a punishment. Remember not to place constant pressure when using a training collar.
• Weight & Size - The weight should be in proportion to your dog's size and weight.
• Placement - It is important to properly place the collar on your dog. The collar must be place on the dog properly for it to be effective.

Temporary measures
It is also important to purchase a training collar that is well-made and strong. A high quality training collar is crucial to your dog and your safety. If your dog's training collar ever breaks, do not panic. Most dogs are not aware that they have broken the collar for a few minutes. In most cases, just act as if the leash is still connected. This way, you can probably still get control of your dog quickly.

Otherwise, make a quick slip by snapping the leash through its handle and then slip over the dog's head. That may not be the best arrangement but it's a good, quick fix.
